Fair Trade was introduced
this week.
The children were all very surprised about the actual percentages and they agreed that it was ‘unfair’. The concept of Fair trade was then much easier to understand and the children could appreciate the benefits of ‘a fair wage’ for a hard day’s work - for Cocoa Farmers.
We played a game in which we paid the Farmer, Cocoa buyer, the
importer, the Chocolate company, the Shop and the tax in chocolate !

Maths
Subtraction of 2-digit numbers from 2-digit
and 3-digit numbers that involved re-grouping was a challenge this week.
We saw some of the class [with lots of determination and effort] begin to grasp
the concept. We used various items to demonstrate; for example, we used multilink
cubes and coins. We will have time to work a little more on this tricky technique
next week. We will also begin work on 3-D
shapes and on Angles.
Literacy
Letters were our focus this week. The work included this week’s
Big Write topic; writing a letter to an Author. We looked at
the standard format and we identified features of Formal letters and then we
compared these to friendly letters. The children were more familiar with
e-mails but interested enough to write short, creative and funny letters during
the week.
Big talk – This week we discussed 3 wishes. The children
very quickly wrote them down and we played a game in which we tried to guess whose
wishes they were. There were some very original ideas and some very kind ones J
