Week 20

Topic "Chocolate"

We started on reading Roald Dahl’s "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory".

A topic cover page was created on the laptops which involved modifying text and searching for and inserting images. Their cover pages are in their google drive folders for you to see and a printed version is in each Topic book in class.

This week we looked at a map of the world. We used the Atlases and we identified the Continents. We talked about climates of different parts of the world. We named and recognised the Equator and we talked about the ideal conditions required for Cocoa trees to grow.

Maths

We practised times tables; continuing with Bronze, Silver and Gold awards.

We continued to work out fractions of numbers; for example 1/3 of 15, ¼ of 20 and ¾ of 40.

At this level children are expected to understand that to work out ¾ of 80 you would need to divide [ by 4] and then multiply [ by 3].

At the next level the connection between 1/10 of a number leads into understanding decimals; for example 1/10 of 80 = 8 and 1/10 of 8 is 0.8

The children completed a mathematics test too.

Next week we move on to data; creating their own graphs and tables.

Literacy

Big Write – was on Thursday this week. It was the ‘Love’ theme, whole-school topic. On Friday the children will work on drafting and preparing this piece of writing ready to read and share with Year 1 next week.

Information Text – the children worked on identifying and differentiating between non-fiction and fiction statements. We worked on the laptops this week to produce information pages of our own. This resulted in quite a range of topics which included tigers, dolphins, cats, horses and ponies, Italy, Russia, Lead [metal], the recorder, diamonds, milk and chocolate. Great work Year 3 Sahara and getting to be very quick and confident in creating your posters. View their saved work on Google drive;
