Week 13

 Maths

Mental maths – speed and strategies

Our focus was on mental maths calculations this week. We were building up to some speed. We also shared and discussed methods for working out answers to problems. The children are keen in responding to a daily test and they are becoming confident and correct in answering random times tables questions posed during the day. Additional practise including working with some speed is available at this site;

Fractions

The children were each given a Fractions booklet in which they started with the familiar ½, ¼ and whole by identifying and shading in the required part of 2D shapes. Other worksheets within the booklet.

MyMaths - offers opportunity for additional practise AND homework tasks. Please encourage your child to work on the ‘lessons’ as well as the homework tasks.

Literacy

Big Talk – this week was to discuss the ‘Water Challenge’ ( see below). The children were very clear about their choices and they could explain their reasons very well.

Big Write – The snowy theme was inspirational too. We “snow-stormed” some ‘wow’ words and talked about a little plan for progression which included a beginning, an event and an ending. We are hoping to turn the stories into story books.

Other

Water Challenge – this is a whole school project aimed at meeting the Nord Anglia Schools Challenge – On Thursday, the whole school gathered in the gym for a special presentation on WATER.  Secondary students highlighted the concerns – too much water, too little and not enough clean water – with the last option coming in with the most votes.  This means the school body will now focus on protecting water purity. Please see this week’s newsletter for more details.

Christmas decorations -  the children made Tree decorations for children in an orphanage - see the two photographs.

Mikulás – Year 3 worked together to present two traditional poems at our Key Stage 2 assembly – well done!

End of Term Reports – have been sent out with an invitation for you to meet in January to discuss the contents of the report.

Next week

… Our customary school activities for this last week of this term include;

·        Winter Olympics – Year 3 and Year 4 will start their games on Monday morning. The children need their P.E. clothes and clean trainers/gym shoes.

·        A Party for Year 3. This is an end-of-term party on the afternoon of Wednesday 11th December from around 2:20pm. The emphasis for the party will be on the children socialising and having fun together as a year group. This year we would like to have all of the children together in the Lemon and Saffron classrooms for music, dancing and games until around 3:00pm. Of course, some simple party favourites such as biscuits, crisps and soft drinks as well as disposable plates and cups would be most welcome by the children after dancing and playing games! After working up a thirst we would all move through to the Sahara classroom for light snacks and drinks. Please see our class noticeboard to indicate what you could bring in to contribute to a fun-filled afternoon.

·        Whole school Assembly on Friday 13th December at 11 a.m. – you are invited to attend – please this week’s newsletter for more details.

No new homework, spelling or Big Write will be given out next week.

All reading and library books are to be returned by Tuesday, after that no more reading books will be going out.

Note that this school term ends at 12 p.m. lunchtime on Friday 13th December. Please see the school newsletter for more details and for next  term’s dates.

Wishing you all a relaxing weekend.
