Meeting the Palaeontologist

On Thursday; to tie in with our Topic on Dinosaurs, Year Three were visited by a famous palaeontologist, Mr Laszlo Makadi. He has been involved in excavating dinosaur and prehistoric remains in Hungary. Mr Makadi showed us a slide show and discussed how his team work in the field and about some of their more interesting finds including hungarosaurus!

Mr Makadi also brought in some dinosaur and other fossils for the children to examine and handle. The children were fascinated and took a lot from his visit. They especially liked touching the dinosaur fossils and especially the prehistoric poo!

The Year Three children came up with some thoughtful questions to ask. This was a relevant time for him to visit and helped us get a better understanding of some of the fauna and flora that lived in a certain part of Hungary during the Cretaceous Period.

Make sure that you ask them about what they have learnt and have found interesting. Following up from the visit the children wrote about the experience of a palaeontologist visiting us and on Friday the class wrote a thank you letter to Mr Makadi.

Below is a link to read more about Lazlo Makadi and his team:

Meeting the Palaeontologist has been particularly useful for us in preparing for our class assembly next Friday.

Note the date and time: Friday 22nd November at 2:45 p.m.

The children are very excited and we are working on getting the balance between presenting facts and on keeping the assembly lively [using their energy and enthusiasm].

I am confident that the children will ‘rise to the occasion’ J

Please note that the “script’ is very individualised; as their confidence increases they can amend, add to and improvise what they say. This is only possible if they think what to say for themselves, from the beginning.

I hope that you will enjoy our class assembly. I am very pleased that the children are very involved and are learning from the process of working on a class assembly.

Numeracy

Also this week we have moved away from report writing and started looking at writing instructions. In Maths we have finished our topic on Measurement and did some addition revision [number walls]
