Term 1, Week 5
or probably more memorably, the week we dug up
dinosaurs bones!
What a day Year 3 had on Thursday! As our entry
point for our new topic, ‘Footprints of the Past’ our trip to Kopaszi Gat had us digging our hearts out to each
find some special treasure… our very own ‘dinosaur bones’! It was wonderful to
see such teamwork with the children all pitching in to support one another
until everyone struck it lucky and found one of their own. I’m sure your child
came home exhausted and extremely sandy but hopefully buzzing with stories of
their adventure. We were so proud of our team of very determined diggers!
The fun continued on Friday when the children were
able to use their special tools to dig away at their finding and begin to
release some of the remains from their ‘rock’. The rest of this
task has been set for homework, along with the task of finding some information
about the specific dinosaur your child has unearthed. As this was only issued
today, we do not expect it back until Wednesday. *Just in case, a ‘cheat’ for extracting the
bones is to run the block under a tap but be careful not to block your drains!
As a perfect link to our new Topic, we have also
begun a new unit in Literacy on Information texts. This week we looked at the
differences between fiction and non-fiction texts and spent time investigating a
range of non-fiction texts to understand their specific features in greater
detail.
In Numeracy we have been working on doubling and
halving numbers and have used the partitioning method of previous weeks to help
us manipulate bigger numbers in these ways as well. We have also begun to look
at money and we use euros to teach this. This week the children have been
adding up piles of different euro coins as well as working out which coins they
would need to use to make specific amounts.
Have a great weekend.
